ABOUT THE PATTERN

17 vertical transitions, using the same method as in the first TRANSITIONS booklet, to use when knitting a garment from the bottom or top, which you can position where you choose on your garment, as well as 9 transitions to use when knitting a garment sideways, and 8 vertical designs incorporating alternating stripes.
The original TRANSITIONS booklet deals with a special method for creating diagonal transitions, as well as simple matching horizontal transitions.
THIS booklet uses the same special method, to create vertical transitions when knitting the garment piece from bottom to top (or top to bottom if you reverse the punchcard or electronic design).
I have also included sideways versions which will produce vertical transitions when the garment is knitted sideways, and some vertical designs which, using this special method, can incorporate alternating stripes.
I have adapted some of the designs from TRANSITIONS for these vertical designs, and added a few additional simple designs.
However, you will not need to already have TRANSITIONS to use this booklet as I will explain the special method again here. It will be easier to do for these vertical transitions, as you will not be needing to move across the needlebed.
I will explain how to place your transition where you want on your garment.

Many suggested garment designs are given, with tips on how to create them, as well as some example garments, with info on how they were created.

EQUIPMENT

Any machine type and gauge, with a 24st punchcard or electronic patterning facility, can be used, a ribber helps with finishing edges but not essential and charting device is desirable, but not essential, although a full size charting device is needed for some the sweaters. Simple garments designs can be made without a charting device. If you need help with this, check out my BEGINNER'S GUIDE, which gives you full instructions on how to produce a range of garments with any yarn, machine or stitch pattern and a few calculations.

Also, if you don’t have your own basic pattern, go to the CHARTING section on this website, for a free PDF download of how to create one as well as lots of useful hints and tips.

Please be aware that the special method will not work with Knitmaster/Silver Reed machines (and similar), as you cannot hand manipulate which stitches will knit in main colour and which stitches will knit in contrast.  All  the sideways transitional designs can be used on these machines.

SIZING

You will be using your own basic pattern or simple diagram, created with your measurements. If you don't have this, go back to the charting page and click to download free instructions on how to create your own pattern, or go to the BEGINNER'S GUIDE, which helps you create diagrams and instructions for simple garments with a few calculations.

YARNS

You can use any yarn suitable to your machine, and suitable to the patterning effect. You will need to use 2 or more colours of the same type so that sections of different colours will knit up to near enough the same tension.
